Refreshing archival material

This blog had long been relegated to the category of missing and, perhaps, forgotten. After looking at the pictures, I decided I might be worth giving the whole thing a new look. With that in mind, here goes...

August, 2003

In August of 2003, Roy came out west for a visit. For oldtimes' sake, we drove in to Gold River.

WELCOME TO GOLD RIVER! Posted by Picasa
At the end of the highway, to the right, the now-defunct pulpmill, ready to be dismantled. And the unkindest cut of all: to be dismantled by workers from India (while local Gold River residents sit unemployed)! I think it's called globalization. Posted by Picasa

Who knows what lies ahead for Gold River, now that the pulpmill is being dismantled? Posted by Picasa
We look over the once-active booming ground by the former pulpmill, hoping for a glimpse of "Luna" the Killer Whale. Luna, or Tsuxit, is believed, by the Mowachaht and Muchalaht First Nations, to embody the spirit of Chief Ambrose Maquinna, who died just days before the whale was first seen in the area. Posted by Picasa
At the end of the highway, the Gold River "harbor". To the left of the picture is the wharf used by the "MV Uchuck III", a 136-foot-long freighter and former World War II minesweeper. Posted by Picasa
At the end of the highway, to the left, is the mouth of he Gold River. Posted by Picasa

Well, this is pretty-much the end of the road: Muchalat Inlet. Posted by Picasa
I'll have to check with Roy on this picture: I think this location is what is known, locally, as "Big Bend". Posted by Picasa
There's little to compare with clear mountain water... Posted by Picasa
The Gold River in one of the placid turns. Posted by Picasa

A viewpoint! Well, we better get out and take some pictures. Posted by Picasa
A terrific view! I'm not sure we quite appreciated the beauty of Gold River when we lived here. Posted by Picasa
"MUST get that shot!" Posted by Picasa

Hanne would have been upset if Roy and I hadn't called on Kim. We caught her by surprise the morning we were leaving Gold River and took her out for a coffee in what used to be "Adam's Rib" ("Moe's Bone", I think it was also affectionately called). Posted by Picasa
Before we leave town, we call on Kim and go for a coffee. Why is it that Roy and I look like 20+ plus years have passed since we left Gold River while Kim looks just like the girl sitting in my Math 9 class in the late 70's. Must be the water in Gold River, eh?  Posted by Picasa
